Coyamito and Laguna Agates: Mexico’s Finest Treasures
Agates are found all over the world — from Brazil and Botswana to Morocco and the United States. Each deposit has its own beauty, but few can compare to the treasures of northern Mexico: the Coyamito and Laguna agates. Both are celebrated worldwide, though each for different reasons.

World-class multicolored Coyamito agate
Coyamito agates are among the rarest and most captivating agates on Earth. What makes them so special is their breathtaking variety of color combinations — often even more striking than Laguna. The purples, yellows, oranges, and reds can appear almost alive, blending into patterns that feel impossible in nature. Many Coyamitos also contain pseudomorphs, most often after aragonite but also from other minerals. These internal transformations, paired with the stone’s fine banding and vivid colors, create agates that are truly one of a kind. Because the deposit is smaller and far less productive, finding a top-grade Coyamito is much harder than finding a Laguna, which makes them especially prized among collectors.

Laguna agates, on the other hand, are famous for their unmatched brilliance and consistency. They display the brightest colors found in agates — reds, oranges, pinks, yellows, blues, and grays — often layered together in astonishing precision. Their fine banding can produce a parallax effect, where colors shift and blend as the stone is moved, creating endless combinations in a single specimen. For decades, Lagunas have set the standard of what the “perfect agate” should look like, and they remain the most recognized and celebrated agates in the world.

Together, Coyamito and Laguna agates represent the pinnacle of what agates can be: brilliant, rare, and endlessly fascinating. Their scarcity, combined with their extraordinary beauty, is why Mexico is home to the most sought-after agates on the planet.
