A Mexican Treasure
Coyamito Agates are found on Rancho Coyamito, located only a few kilometers from the famous Laguna deposit. Both formed millions of years ago within ancient volcanic flows of the Sierra del Gallego region. Gas pockets trapped inside these lava layers slowly filled with silica-rich solutions, crystallizing layer by layer to form the mesmerizing fortification patterns that define these agates.
While Laguna Agates are celebrated for their precision and perfection, Coyamito Agates are admired for their color — fiery reds, luminous purples, warm yellows, and even combinations so vivid they seem painted. Many collectors consider Coyamito the more expressive of the two, with color palettes that push the boundaries of what agates can display.
Color and Character
Each Coyamito Agate is a universe of its own. No two pieces share the same color combination — even nodules from the same pocket can differ completely. This ever-changing variety makes Coyamito one of the most exciting localities for collectors, with new discoveries continuously expanding the known spectrum of colors and patterns.
Museum-quality Coyamito Agates are distinguished by:
Intense, saturated color with natural translucency
Unique features like pseudomorphs
Perfect symmetry and fine banding
These characteristics make top Coyamitos not just collectible — but precious gemstones, representing one of the highest forms of chalcedony known.

Aragonite Pseudomorphs — A Geological Wonder
Among the most famous Coyamito specimens are the aragonite pseudomorphs — rare formations where aragonite crystals were replaced by silica, preserving their shape but transforming their composition. The result is a breathtaking blend of structure and color, often displaying radiating crystal textures framed by vivid agate banding. These pseudomorphs are considered some of the most spectacular in the world, unmatched in color diversity and aesthetic quality.

Mining and Discovery
Coyamito has been collected since the mid-20th century, though mining is limited and access to the ranch is controlled. Early pockets from the 1980s and 1990s produced many of the legendary pieces seen in private collections today. For years, few new agates emerged — until a few years ago, when fresh deposits were discovered, producing material with striking new color combinations and brilliant clarity.
Even so, top-tier Coyamito Agates remain rare. Extracting complete nodules is extremely difficult — most are broken during mining due to the hardness of the surrounding rock and the delicate nature of the agate’s outer husk. Each perfect specimen represents countless hours of labor, cutting, and polishing to reveal the masterpiece within.
Legacy and Significance
Coyamito Agates are more than minerals — they are natural artworks forged over millions of years. Their beauty bridges science and art, admired by geologists, designers, and collectors worldwide. Together with Laguna, they define the pinnacle of Mexican agates — a pair of deposits whose quality and variety stand unmatched in the world.
From private museums to public exhibitions, Coyamito continues to inspire fascination, symbolizing the finest potential of silica’s transformation into gemstone perfection.
